This article in the New York Times Home and Garden section outlines the history of the grand staircase the servant's staircase and how the function of the servant staircase has evolved into a uniquely different application in the 21st Century.

Back stairs began to return to plans for new houses in the early 1990's, builders say, and the idea has gained momentum only in the past five years.

ADA Conformity a Benefit to All

February 04, 2004 - Gwinnett Daily Online

In an article supporting the need for greater handicap accessibility and sensitivity for those who struggle daily to perform simple tasks that most of us take for granted, the plea is made for all facilities to be designed and fitted to ensure safe and easy access for all. The article identifies a new building in Albany, which should have been designed to accommodate handicap access, was not as handicap accessible as it should have been:

"Although the new Central Square Office Complex at 240 Pine Ave. in Albany was completed about a year ago, a group brought to the attention of the Dougherty County Commission last week the fact the main entrance is not as accessible as it could be."

"The issue is not that the building fails to meet federal ADA requirements. It’s that people with handicaps wouldn’t have to struggle to enter the building if an automatic door opener were available to press."

"Take the abundance of people who now have hip and knee replacement surgery and people, young and old alike, who suffer broken legs, arms or shoulders or diseases that reduce their energies and lung capacity; suddenly, the handrails in the bathroom stalls, ramps leading into buildings and designated parking for the handicapped take on considerable significance. There is understanding of why these amenities are included."

"They may, some day, be just what enable any of us to continue with daily activities, which help give meaning to our lives."
